Sinus Lift Surgery

Sinus lift surgery is a procedure in which bone is added to the upper jaw, in the area of the molars and premolars, to allow the implant to be added. Bone loss can be due to a variety of causes:

  • Many people who have lost teeth from the upper jaw – especially the back teeth, or the molars – do not have enough bone to receive the implants. Due to the anatomy of the skull, the back of the upper jaw has fewer bones than the lower jaw.
  • Bones may have been lost due to periodontal disease.
  • Tooth loss can also contribute to bone loss. Once the teeth are removed, the body begins to absorb the bones from the jaw. If teeth are missing for a long time, there is often not enough bone to place implants.
  • The maxillary sinus may be too close to the upper jaw to place implants. The shape and size of this sinus varies from person to person and may increase as you grow older.
