What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention and correction of abnormal positioning of teeth and jaws. It also focuses on the development of the facial skull, to diagnose and promptly intervene in possible cases of skeletal discrepancies.
Treatments include the use of special orthodontic appliances (the well-known braces) that serve both functional and aesthetic aspects, aligning and straightening the teeth.
Apart from the common braces, other orthodontic appliances can be used during orthodontic treatment to improve the patient’s aesthetic appearance. Such are the transparent braces made of ceramic or sapphire, the lingual orthodontic braces, as well as the clear aligners.
During an orthodontic treatment we use some teeth as a base we lean on to move the others. In cases we cannot rely on such teeth, the use of some auxiliary temporary support devices, the so-called orthodontic microimplants (Temporary Anchorage Devices – TADs) are required.
At this point it should be emphasized that it is important to realize a first assessment of the patient’s condition at a young age in order to diagnose early indicators of possible skeletal problems, which can be relatively easily corrected at this stage of development to avoid potential future surgeries. This can be done in a first phase of treatment with the help of special mobile orthodontic appliances.
Benefits of Orthodontics
The treatment we can plan for you can be proven to be beneficial in several ways. These include:
- Improved appearance with a more attractive smile
- Straight teeth, which will reduce the chances of caries and gum disease
- Improved ability to bite, with equal pressure distribution along the jaws
- Reduced risk of random injury from protruding teeth
Orthodontics with Clear Aligners
An elegant and discreet alternative orthodontic treatment is the one that uses transparent, plastic form of dental braces, which can be inserted and removed by the patient himself.
A consecutive series of splints is produced for each patient. Each splint, which is almost invisible, makes a small movement of only a few fractions of a millimeter in each tooth.
Thus, the patient is asked to use each splint for about 2 weeks and replace it with the next. In this way, step by step, we reach the desired result.
Orthodontics and Periodontium
One of the main side effects that periodontal disease can cause is the movement of teeth in ectopic, non-aesthetic positions.
The least invasive way to repair this side effect is to apply orthodontic treatment.
A precondition for this is that a proper periodontology treatment has been completed and the maintenance of this result has been ensured.
Due to our expertise in these areas, we can provide you with a combination of therapies that will yield the best results, both functionally and aesthetically.
